What is Move It Kanal?

With the bilingual project Move It Kanal, Lasso and its partners Erasmus University College Brussels - Social Work, JES vzw, D'Broej, RAB/BKO à Bruxelles, LES Molenbeek and IHECS want to stimulate cultural participation by young people in the Brussels Canal Zone. Do they participate in cultural activities? Is cultural participation important to them? Are there enough cultural activities of any interest to them? Who can be addressed if they have any specific wishes? Are there organisations and art houses that offer what they want? How can we bridge the gap between the cultural offer and these youngsters?

There are three main elements in the project: research, networking and pilot projects.

The first phase until the end of 2017 composed of a qualitative research on the cultural experience of young people from the Brussels Canal Zone, conducted by the Erasmus University College - Social Work. Purpose here was to find out whether young people participate in cultural activities in the Brussels Canal Zone. To this end, a number of young people were interviewed, as well as key practitioners from the cultural, youth and education sector.

Here you find the publication with the results of the research on the cultural experience of young people from the Brussels Canal Zone (February 2016 - April 2017).

In the meantime, within the framework of networking, people from the above mentioned sectors as well as artists were visited to get a better view on the richness of the Canal Zone.

These elements fed into the next phase, where the concrete pilot projects for and by young people are executed. In preparation of these pilot projects, Lasso organized (end of 2017 - beginning of 2018) several Think & Act sessions where practitioners from different sectors were invited to exchange ideas and experiences. From January 2018 onwards, several pilot projects have started.

In the autumn of 2018, Lasso also launched « Move It Kanal – Doc Series », with which it wants to give more visibility to existing initiatives and collaborations that bring culture and young people closer together.
